Edith Piaf and Miles Davis
— June 12, 2012  |  New York, New York 10199   |  Forever 45¢ Stamps in PSA pane of 20

Symbolizing the musical ties between the United States and France, the stamps honoring Edith Piaf and Miles Davis are being issued together as a se-tenant pair. Edith Piaf is one of the few French popular singers to become a household name in the U.S., while American jazz trumpeter Miles Davis is beloved in France, where he performed frequently and was made a Chevalier in the Legion of Honor.
The stamp art captures Piaf in a dramatic pose, typical of her emotional performances that moved audiences to tears with her soulful delivery. Americans may know Edith Piaf best for her cheerful song “La Vie en Rose” (“Life in Pink”), about the experience of falling in love and seeing life through rose-colored glasses. She was given the name “Piaf”, Parisian slang for sparrow, because of her slight size. She toured the U.S. ten times.

Miles Davis epitomized “cool” style and was one of the most important musicians of his era. The stamp art depicts him in a performance pose. He was a leading jazz musician for decades, setting trends and exploring musical styles from bebop through cool jazz, fusion, and funk. He was also a great bandleader, and many important musicians rose to prominence in his bands.

Kidd Jordan is a jazz saxophonist and music educator from New Orleans, La. After completing a music degree from Southern University in Baton Rouge, he relocated and taught at Southern University at New Orleans from 1974 - 2006.
He has performed and recorded with a wide selection of musicians in styles ranging from R & B to Avante-Garde Jazz including Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, William Parker, Ornette Coleman, Ellis Marsalis, Cannonball Adderly and Cecil Taylor.
What interesting about his performances and recordings is that they are entirely improvised. As an instructor of jazz studies, he encourages his students to pursue new approaches to traditional musical forms.
I’ve never had the opportunity to meet Kidd Jordan, but he lives through me. Kidd Jordan taught Kirk Ford at Southern University, and Kirk Ford was my father’s saxophone teacher, and now Kirk Ford is teaching me saxophone as I pursue different and new approaches to traditional musical forms.

A Love Supreme is listed as one of the greatest jazz albums ever and is generally considered Coltrane’s greatest works. The album is a four-part suite that is broken up into tracks: Acknowledgment, Resolution, Pursuance, & Psalm. Intended to be a spiritual album, it represents his personal struggle for purity and expresses the artist deep gratitude as he admits to his talent and instrument as owned not by him, but by a spiritual higher power.
The album influence has been extensive and diverse and is a timeless treasure.
